| The archaeological area of Monte Sirai is only 2 Km. far from the town of Carbonia (S.S. 126) and can be easily reached by an asphalt road. The Phoenician and Punic town stands on a hill whose history dates back to the Neolithic (as the presence of the Domus de Janas witnesses) and after to the Nuragic Age. However it is only with the Phoenicians, that occupied the hill from about 750 B.C., and above all with the Carthaginians (from 520 B.C.) that the town assumed the look still visible today. The settlement consists of different areas. In this way the town can be visited following different itineraries: the inhabited area and its quarters, squares and houses. The sacred places with the temple of the town and the tophet. The necropolises with the earlier Phoenician graves and the fine underground rooms of the funeral Carthaginian hypogea. |
